The largest Italian Heritage Parade the city has ever seen will march through Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach on Sunday, Oct. 12. And that’s saying a lot, considering it’s San Francisco’s oldest civic event, celebrating its 146th year, and the nation’s oldest Italian-American parade. “This year is going to be the biggest parade we’ve had so far,” said Tony Passanisi, president of the nonprofit Columbus Day Celebration Committee. “We’ve had to stop taking entries.” Eighty-seven units – some containing hundreds of people – will march. It starts at Jefferson and Stockton Streets in Fisherman’s Wharf, proceeds south through North Beach on Columbus Avenue, and ends in Washington Square in front of Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Parade viewing is available throughout the route. Passanisi wasn’t sure why this year attracted so many entrants, but guessed the good weather lately or the excitement surrounding the return of Fleet Week might be reasons.

Columbus Day Holiday Muni Service and Parking Enforcement
- On Monday: Muni service will operate on a Sunday schedule.
- Parking meters and seven day street sweeping will be enforced citywide on theholiday. Residential parking permits and Monday-Friday daytime street sweeping and commuter towaway will not be enforced.
- Meters on The Embarcadero and at Fisherman’s Wharf, are enforced seven days perweek throughout the year, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
- Hazards are always subject to ticketing and towing.
U.S. Navy Fleet Week
From Thursday through Monday: Fleet Week will be held along Fisherman’s Wharf and the Marina District. In support of our military personnel, the SFMTA will offer free Muni Service (including Cable Car) to those in uniform or those who present military ID card during the Fleet Week.

- The Blue Angels will practice on Friday from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
- From Friday through Sunday, the Parade of Ships, two air shows and ship tours will be held to celebrate the U.S. Navy Fleet Week. These events will impact the Fisherman’s Wharf area and the Marina District.
- The celebration will begin on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Parade of Ships and continue on Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. with the air show. Ship tours will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday through Monday. A crowd of over 300,000 is expected each weekend day.
- Jefferson Street between Hyde Street and westerly terminus will be closed from 5 a.m., Friday to 6 p.m., Sunday.
- To accommodate the crowds for these events, SFMTA will provide supplemental service on the following lines and routes during the time specified on Saturday and Sunday:
- From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- F Market & Wharves line will be supplemented by F-line shuttle to and from between stops at 11th/Market streets and Powell/Beach streets
- From Noon to 7 p.m.
- 8X Bayshore Express route (Outbound Only) will be supplemented between stops at Kearny/Pacific streets and City College.
- From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- 22 Fillmore route will be supplemented to and from between stops at Fillmore/Bay streets and Fillmore/McAllister streets.
- 28 19th Avenue route will be supplemented to and from between stops at Fort Mason and San Francisco State University.
- 47 Van Ness route will be supplemented to and from stops between North Point Street/Van Ness Avenue and South Van Ness/Mission/Market streets.
- 108 Treasure Island route will be supplemented to and from between Treasure Island and Transbay Terminal.
- Traffic congestion and disruption of transit service will be expected in the northern section of the city after the Fleet Week Air Shows.
- From 3 to 7 p.m., each day, Saturday and Sunday, with an exception to buses, taxis and bicycles, southbound Polk Street between Bay and Union streets will be closed to traffic. Local access will be allowed.
- From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Traffic coming into San Francisco is anticipated to be congested. Parking will be limited. BART, Ferries, AC Transit and SamTrans are alternate transportation options. Parking at BART stations is available on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, please visitwww.511.org and www.BART.gov.
- The annual Italian Heritage Day Parade (see below for more details) will also take place on Sunday and the parade will start at 12:30 p.m. at Jefferson and Powell streets. It is anticipated that traffic through the Fisherman’s Wharf area will be congested.
- SFMTA encourages event participants to take public transit, taxis, bike or walk to the event.
- For riders who want to transfer at BART station or Market Street from Chinatown, please take the 10 Townsend or 12 Folsom/Pacific Muni route from Broadway Street to the Montgomery Station or take 1 California from Stockton Street to Drumm Street with a short walk to the Embarcadero Station.

Italian Heritage Parade
- On Sunday: The annual Italian Heritage Day Parade will be held in North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf beginning at 12:30 p.m. from Jefferson and Powell streets and proceed to Washington Square. The parade should last 2.5 hours and 150,000 people are expected. For event details, please visit www.sfcolumbusday.org.
- The parade formation will require the following street closures, beginning at 8 a.m.:
- Powell Street between Chestnut and Beach streets
- Stockton Street between Bay and Beach streets
- Beach Street between Mason Street and Grant Avenue
- North Point Street between Mason Street and The Embarcadero
- Francisco Street between Stockton and Mason streets
- Greenwich Street between Powell and Columbus streets
- The parade route will begin on Jefferson Street at Mason Street, proceed west on Jefferson Street, south on Leavenworth Street, south on Columbus Avenue, south on Stockton Street, east on Vallejo Street, north on Columbus Avenue, north on Stockton Street, east on to Filbert Street and past the review stands at Washington Square Park. Parade units will disburse on Powell Street. Traffic along the parade route will be closed until the parade clears.

You know it's Fleet Week in San Francisco when the Blue Angels arrive. They arrived in San Francisco in advance of a weekend air show that was cancelled last year due to budget cuts and sequestration. This year, the events surrounding Fleet Week are expected to be better than ever, thanks in part to the arrival of the USS America which will be commissioned in San Francisco. The USS America primarily serves the Marine Corps, carrying aircraft and ground troops. The arrival of the Blue Angels in Oakland symbolizes the return of Fleet Week. This is a tradition that was not seen nor heard last year. Practice will begin on Thursday and they perform on Saturday and Sunday. But it was the Navy's newest ship, the USS America cutting through the dense fog Monday which made for an unofficial start to Fleet Week. The vessel took two years to build in Mississippi. It left in July, going around Cape Horn, the southern most part of South America and finally arriving late Monday morning in San Francisco. It will be commissioned on Thursday, meaning it will now be part of the Navy's fleet. "Our ship's motto is actually prepared in war or in peace. So that is exactly what USS America is ready to do," USS America spokesperson Lt. Dawn Stankus said. The ship will have MV-22 Osprey helicopters and several F35B aircraft that can perform vertical lifts and take offs. "We can go out and perform humanitarian assistance disaster relief missions with the Marine Core aircraft we have on board," Stankus said. Some crew members went through a number of emergency drills to demonstrate the many things they are able to do once they arrive in a city or country. Those from the Bay Area were glad to be back home.
"Amazing, actually. I haven't seen my family in almost a year, so being away from them actually being able to come home on the USS America during Fleet Week is actually an amazing feeling," USS America Petty Ofc. Calum Jacobs said. An Oprey was on display Monday at the Coast Guard Air Station in San Francisco. It transports the Navy's medical shock trauma platoon which consists of doctors and nurses ready to setup an emergency room practically anywhere in the world. It was shown to the public at San Francisco General Hospital. "The STP can treat up to 50 patients, 20 percent being critical without resupply," one woman said. And this is where surgeries would be performed. Up to 18 within a 48 hour period. This kind of field hospital would be extremely helpful in case of a major earthquake.
Fleet Week will run through next Monday. It will include a parade of ships and performances by the Navy's Blue Angels this weekend.
