SFMTA Gears Up for Busy October Weekend

Note America’s Cup Muni Visitor Information and Maps of Events.

 

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), reminds customers, residents and visitors to San Francisco of the numerous major events that started on Tuesday, Oct. 2 and will run through the Columbus Holiday, Monday, Oct. 8. The multiple events will significantly impact traffic throughout the city this weekend. Event participants and fun seekers should check with www.sfmta.com or call 311 to find out which of the 80 Muni lines will get them where they want to go.

 

Attendees are encouraged to come early to avoid back-ups and are reminded that parking is limited at all event venues.

 

The major events running through Oct. 8 include:

•America’s Cup World Series – Marina Green (Tuesday through Sunday);

•Fleet Week – northern and eastern waterfront (Tuesday through Monday; airshows on Saturday and Sunday);

•Italian Heritage Parade – Fisherman’s Wharf to North Beach (Sunday);

•49ers Football – Candlestick Park (Sunday); and

•Giants playoff baseball games - AT&T Park (Saturday and Sunday).

 

One lane of northbound Embarcadero between Washington and Bay streets will be converted to bicycle use only to provide better bike access to the waterfront events and, as needed, emergency vehicle access, on Saturday and Sunday.

 

Stockton Street will be closed between Geary and Market streets as part of the on-going Central Subway construction. A cruise ship will unload and load on Saturday at Pier 35, adding to congestion on The Embarcadero.

 

America’s Cup World Series

 

The 34th annual America’s Cup World Series, a professional boat racing event, will take place from Tuesday through Sunday. The main viewing areas and the America’s Cup Village are at the west end of Marina Green. Races take place Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

 

Approximately 300,000 people are expected to attend. All Muni lines in the event area will experience increased ridership and traffic.

 

To accommodate the crowds for these events:

•The F Market & Wharves will be supplemented by an F-line shuttle Saturday and Sunday; The F line shuttle will operate from Spear Street and Market Street to Pier 39. Passengers at the Embarcadero Station should use exit B-4.

•The E-Embarcadero streetcar line from Caltrain Depot will run on Saturday and Sunday;

•From Thursday through Sunday, the SFMTA will supplement service on the 47 and 49 routes with the 47L Van Ness Limited-Stop special bus service;

•On Saturday and Sunday, the 47 Local will receive additional service (tentative, based on need); 

•In coordination with SFMTA, key regional transit operators are also offering special-event level service this weekend to carry more riders, including BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, the PresidiGo shuttle and San Francisco Bay Ferry routes.

•Ample bicycle parking will be provided.

 

Fleet Week

 

Fleet Week activities will extend from Crissy Field to Aquatic Park, with special activities at Pier 80, from Thursday, Oct 4 to Monday, Oct 8.

 

The SFMTA will provide complimentary access to Muni service for all military personnel (with Military ID or in uniform) in honor of Fleet Week.

 

The Blue Angels will practice on Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday between 12:30 and 4 p.m.

 

Over the weekend, the Parade of Ships, two air shows and ship tours will be held to celebrate the U.S. Navy Fleet Week. These events will impact the Fisherman’s Wharf area and the Marina District. More than 300,000 people are anticipated for these events each weekend day.

 

The celebration will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Parade of Ships and continue on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. with the air show. Ship tours will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Saturday through Monday.

 

To accommodate the crowds for these events:

•The F Market & Wharves will be supplemented by an F-line shuttle Saturday and Sunday; The F line shuttle will operate from Spear Street and Market Street to Pier 39. Passengers at the Embarcadero Station should use exit B-4;

•Muni’s T-Third light rail carries riders to Marin Street, a short walk to Cesar Chavez Street and Pier 80; and

Italian Heritage Parade

 

On Sunday the 144th annual Italian Heritage Day Parade will be held in North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf beginning at 12:30 p.m. from Jefferson and Powell streets and proceed to Washington Square. The parade should last 2.5 hours and 150,000 people are expected.

 

The parade formation will require the following street closures, beginning at 8 a.m.:

•Powell Street between Chestnut and Beach streets

•Stockton Street between Bay and North Point streets

•Beach Street between Powell and Stockton streets

•North Point Street between Mason Street and The Embarcadero

•Francisco Street between Stockton and Mason streets

•The parade route will be closed to traffic until the parade clears.

•The following Muni lines and routes will be affected:

•Powell-Mason Cable Car

•F Market & Wharves

•8X Bayshore Express

•30 Stockton

•39 Coit

•45 Union/Stockton

•47 Van Ness

•Parking is very limited in the North Beach neighborhood.

Columbus Day Holiday Muni Service and Parking Enforcement

 

Muni service will follow regular weekday schedule on Columbus Day, Monday.

 

Parking meters and seven day street sweeping will be enforced citywide on the holiday. Commuter tow away, residential parking permits and Monday-Friday daytime street sweeping will not be enforced.

 

In 2012 meters on Port of San Francisco property, including The Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf, will be enforced seven days per week throughout the year, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
