The mission of the Community Development Committee is to celebrate, preserve and share the rich fishing and maritime heritage of Fisherman’s Wharf and its continuing role in the development of San Francisco.
Goals:
- To share the past, present and future stories of the fishing and maritime industries on Fisherman’s Wharf through:
- oDeveloping a learning center on Fisherman’s Wharf, preferably in a historical building.
- oAdding and modifying historical signage throughout the Wharf.
- oPartnering with the marketing committee and media organizations to profile Fisherman’s Wharf.
- oExploring the potential for designating Fisherman’s Wharf and historical district.
- To support local, sustainable fishing practices by:
- oEducating local restaurants, visitors and residents about the meaning and importance of “sustainable” seafood consumption.
- oPartnering with organizations working on behalf of the fishing industries.
- oAdvocating for legislation and policies that support the fishing industries.
- oSupporting programs that preserve and grow local fishing efforts.
- oExploring and supporting the establishment of a fish market where the local fishing fleet can sell sustainable seafood while educating the public.
- To partner with organizations that protect the Bay and its healthy fisheries by:
- oAdvocating for the protection of the bay and its watershed to support the revitalization of the fishing industry.
- oHelping to build recognition for the organizations working to protect the Bay.
- oSupporting the Bay Institute’s Aquarium of the Bay located on Fisherman’s Wharf.
