The mission of the Community Development Committee is to celebrate, preserve and share the rich fishing and maritime heritage of Fisherman’s Wharf and its continuing role in the development of San Francisco.

Goals:

• To share the past, present and future stories of the fishing and maritime industries on Fisherman’s Wharf through:

1. oDeveloping a learning center on Fisherman’s Wharf, preferably in a historical building.
2. oAdding and modifying historical signage throughout the Wharf.
3. oPartnering with the marketing committee and media organizations to profile Fisherman’s Wharf.
4. oExploring the potential for designating Fisherman’s Wharf and historical district.

• To support local, sustainable fishing practices by:

1. oEducating local restaurants, visitors and residents about the meaning and importance of “sustainable” seafood consumption.
2. oPartnering with organizations working on behalf of the fishing industries.
3. oAdvocating for legislation and policies that support the fishing industries.
4. oSupporting programs that preserve and grow local fishing efforts.
5. oExploring and supporting the establishment of a fish market where the local fishing fleet can sell sustainable seafood while educating the public.

• To partner with organizations that protect the Bay and its healthy fisheries by:

1. oAdvocating for the protection of the bay and its watershed to support the revitalization of the fishing industry.
2. oHelping to build recognition for the organizations working to protect the Bay.
3. oSupporting the Bay Institute’s Aquarium of the Bay located on Fisherman’s Wharf.

Tucked away behind the historic Cannery building at the end of Columbus Avenue is Joseph Conrad Park at the gateway to Fisherman’s Wharf. The goal of this committee is to work with the surrounding businesses and neighbors to help maintain and beautify the park as well as partnering with city agencies on law enforcement and keeping the park safe for citizens and visitors.

The goal of the SOBO committee is to ensure that the Fisherman’s Wharf community is “Clean and Safe”. The following are managed by the SOBO committee.

• Pedestrian Way Finding Signage
  The pedestrian way finding signage program has installed 10 signs in the Land-side CBD to compliment the six signs installed on the northside of Jefferson Stet by the Port of San Francisco.
• Hanging Flower Baskets
  Our community has decorated Jefferson Street with beautiful hanging flower baskets to adorn the light poles.
• Quarterly Steam Cleaning of Streets (Land-side CBD)
  To add to the cleanliness of our District the Land-side CBD will have its sidewalks steamed cleaned on a quarterly basis to improve the appearance of our highly trafficked corridors of Jefferson and Beach Streets and the arteries from Powell to Leavenworth Streets
• Street Maintenance (Land-side CBD ) High Season
  Augmenting the cleaning of the streets within our Land-side 24 block boundary with supplemental street maintenance services
• Graffiti Abatement Program (Land-side CBD)
  Remaining committed to removing all graffiti offenses made in the boundaries of the Land-side CBD within one week after receiving report
• Security & 10B Police Evening Coverage
  During the months of highly visited periods, the Wharf will be patrolled by 10B police officers from Central Station adding to the security in our Districts
  Business Neighborhood Watch Program
  The CBD is committed to making this community safe for both our businesses and visitors, therefore a Business Neighborhood Watch program is being developed in concert with SF SAFE
  
  

The  goals of the PIERsafe Committee are:

• Creating an emergency and preparedness plan for the community
• Recruiting new community members to become NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) certified
• Holding an emergency response training exercise within the participation of businesses and residents in the Fisherman’s Wharf community participating
• Increase the involvement from the community in the PIERsafe program.

What is the difference between PIERsafe & NERT?

PIERsafe is a committee of the FWCBD. NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) is a program through the SFFD that certifies community members in emergency preparedness and incident command operations.

Annual Drill

There are many NERT drills throughout the year put on by SFFD. The PIERsafe committee works with SFFD to put on their own drill, specific to Fisherman’s Wharf and it’s businesses and community members.
