FISHERMAN’S WHARF COMMUNITY BENEFIT DISTRICT RECEIVES COMMUNITY WIDE SUPPORT AND FUNDING FOR DESIGN OF JEFFERSON STREET IMPROVEMENT PLAN

March 7, 2012, San Francisco, CA — The Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District (www.visitfishermanswharf.com) has received wide community support for plans to redesign public areas of Jefferson Street in the Fisherman’s Wharf area. The planned improvements were presented in a series of community meetings and will provide an easier and more enjoyable experience for visitors, residents, and local businesses.Investing in the infrastructure of the most visited section of San Francisco will benefit all of San Francisco by providing increased tax revenue to be used for programs throughout the City.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 unanimously approved the first step in moving the process forward allocating funding for the design process for Phase 1 of the Jefferson Street project, the two-block area from Hyde to Jones Streets along Jefferson Street.

“This plan has been in the works for six years,” said FWCBDexecutive director Christine Maley-Grubl. “And now with the added anticipation of the America’s Cup, we are anxious to do all we can to make Fisherman’s Wharf enjoyable and easily accessible for all visitors and our local businesses by completing Phase 1 of the project in time for the America’s Cup.”

Since 2006, the San Francisco Planning Department has led an effort in coordination with the Fisherman's Wharf CBD, local community organizations, and city-wide groups to explore improvements to the area. Improvements will provide safe routes for bicycles, including connecting the Bay Trail; pedestrian friendly streets and sidewalks, enhanced lighting, two-way traffic, reducing traffic congestion and providing a promenade experience for visitors and residents.

The Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District was founded in November of 2005 by the business and property owners of the San Francisco neighborhood. The district is funded through an annual assessment for 15 years from the property owners.
