One of the goals of the FWCBD is to meet the San Francisco Board of Supervisor's 679-02 Resolution mandating a zero waste by 2020. The FWCBD intends to achieve zero waste by 2017. By organizing and unifying the residents, retailers, restaurants, landowners, tourist destinations, special events, and the fishing industry, the FWCBD provides an unprecedented opportunity to develop a uniform zero waste program, promote Recology's organics and recycling services, and disseminate information through the FWCBD's listserv, community meetings, workshops, newsletters, and website.

In November of 2010, the FWCBD received a grant from SF Environment to help achieve these goals and is currently working with SF Environment, Recology, the Port of SF, and local non-profits (i.e. SF Conservation Corps, SF Job Corps). The goal of the grant is to make Fisherman's Wharf a zero waste zone. 

We are dedicated to implementing zero waste throughout the FWCBD, to make the area more sustainable and to support the efforts of the mandatory commercial recycling and composting ordinance.

The Zero Waste grant funds are meant to cover program start-up costs during the first two years of implementation. Once the zero waste program is implemented and the grant term is over, the FWCBD will continue to manage and oversee the diversion database without the assistance of a consultant. Grant funds are being used for recycling equipment, outreach items, and the specialist to work directly with the participants in educating management and employees, developing and maintaining the diversion database, and training FWCBD staff to maintain the program. Once the consultant has completed the tasks and the grant ends, the FWCBD will work directly with Recology for participant diversion needs.
