The Blue Angels air show is set to return to San Francisco next year as part of the city's annual Fleet Week celebration, U.S. Navy officials announced. The Navy's precision flight demonstration team will be performing over the Bay on Oct. 11 and 12, 2014. The Blue Angels had to cancel all of their 2013 shows because of the federal sequestration cuts. San Francisco's Fleet Week typically features the air show, a Navy Parade of Ships, and disaster drills by local, state and federal first responders.

Every restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf has a claim to fame. Castagnola's - the two-story, neon-lit leviathan at the intersection of Jefferson and Jones - has at least two.

It's the oldest restaurant on the wharf, dating to 1916. And it claims to have invented the Dungeness crab cocktail. Legend has it that one of the restaurant's founders, Tomaso Castagnola, created the cold dish for the World's Fair in 1915. A year later, he opened a crab stand on the wharf.

(10-26) 16:17 PDT San Francisco -- Waiting for her in-laws to finish their fish and crab lunch at Fisherman's Wharf, Nicole Gulla stood in the late morning sunshine, watching her 2-year-old bat a balloon around while her husband and older daughter played a game of catch. Behind her, taking over several blocks of Jefferson Street, were dozens of booths pushing tie-dyed shirts and Moroccan face creams, hand-crafted purses and the usual San Francisco tchotchkes. "It's cute," said Gulla, who'd come with her family from Sacramento for the day. "It feels like a real local vibe."

Reel in some fun at inaugural Wharf Fest in San Francisco

The event is the first of its kind at Fisherman's Wharf, and will include live music, food and wine tastings, carnival rides, fireworks and more. Special exhibitors will include Wharf merchants, local artists and seafood restaurants. On Oct. 26, Wharf restaurants will compete in a chowder cook-off and, for a fee, festival attendees can participate in a chowder tasting. On Oct. 27, local chefs will set up a live demonstration kitchen by the Wharf's iconic crab wheel at Jefferson and Taylor streets.

The festival will last from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, and will extend from Ghirardelli Square to Pier 39. Traffic will be closed off in the area for the weekend.

Known officially as The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park since 1981, this park is often referred to as simply Aquatic Park, which is technically a district within the park itself. Talk about longevity. Three different names, three different looks, one extended family and one 67-year-old restaurant. That's the short description of Capurro's, at the northern end - or, as owner Paul Capurro says, the "local" end - of Fisherman's Wharf. The fuller story is one of a family that has persevered in San Francisco's rocky restaurant business and made a go of it over the course of four generations. Capurro's began life in 1946 as the Sausalito Cafe, named after the ferry that pulled up in the rear. At that time, the wharf was more of a working port, and fishermen ferry passengers would come in daily for breakfast. "Some of my earliest memories were of breakfast," says Capurro, 64. "Everyone used to smoke and eat at the same time, and I was just tall enough to be under the smoke. I'd go in, kiss my Aunt Margaret and just hang out, listening to all the old fishing stories." Aunt Margaret was Margaret Franceschi, who was considered family and owned the restaurant with her partner Tony Hogan. In 1971, Capurro's uncle, Mario Alioto, bought out Hogan, and the new partners remodeled and renamed the restaurant Franceschi's.

There will be fireworks - but no fleet - at this year's Fleet Week.

The Blue Angels air show and naval ship parade, which could be counted on to draw more than 1 million spectators to the San Francisco waterfront, have both fallen victim to the federal budget cuts known as sequestration that took effect earlier this year.

San Francisco Beautiful Recognizes Newly Pedestrian and Bike-Friendly Jefferson Street with Beautification Award

September 18, 2013, San Francisco, CA — San Francisco Beautiful, a group dedicated to creating and maintaining the beauty of the City, honored The Fisherman’s Wharf Public Realm Plan with the top award for beautification in the category of “Access” at the 42nd annual award ceremony. 

The first phase of the revamped pedestrian and bike -friendly Jefferson Street, the principal tourist thoroughfare in the center of Fisherman’s Wharf, was completed in June of 2013. The partners of this public realm project included the Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District, the San Francisco Department of Public Works, the Port of San Francisco, The San Francisco Planning Department, and the San Francisco Municipal Transport Agency (SFMTA). Other beautification award winners included #cleanstreets, the Green Hairstreak Project, and Emerald Park.

The award comes after six years of planning, design, and construction of the new section of Jefferson Street spanning from Hyde Street to Jones Street. The improvements to the highly-trafficked road include a sidewalk that is two-times wider than its predecessor, pedestrian-friendly cross walks, improved lighting, a custom banded concrete roadway, and most notably, two-way traffic to reduce congestion and increase bike access.
