BOUDIN'S BAKERY

160 Jefferson Street and at PIER 39  |  415-928-1849 | Website

In 1849, the Boudin family struck culinary gold. Wild yeasts in the San Francisco air had imparted a unique tang to their traditional French bread, giving rise to San Francisco sourdough French bread. Today, the Boudin family's initial recipe lives on in the hands and hearts of our expert bakers, with a portion of the original mother dough still starting each and every sourdough loaf we make.

BUENA VISTA CAFé

2765 Hyde Street  |  415-474-5044  | Website

The original building where the Buena Vista Café sits today was a boarding house until 1916 when the landlord converted the first floor into a saloon. That saloon was named the Buena Vista, meaning "Good View" in Spanish. The view was good indeed and it served as a warm meeting place for hundreds of fishermen and handlers who worked for the nearby Sardine Cannery. There they could take in a whiskey while scouting the bay for incoming fishing boats which would mean, "Quick! Finish your drink and back to meet the boats!" In 1952, with the help of a Pulitzer-Prize winning writer, the Buena Vista introduced to the world its now famous Irish Coffee. The recipe has never changed and the view is still as good.
