OF THE OIL SPILL FROM THE COSCO BUSAN IN OUR BAY
After the Cosco Busan struck the Bay Bridge, between
12:30 and 3:30 PM, oil landed on the shores of Alcatraz
Island and several beaches throughout the Golden
Gate National Recreation Area and San Francisco
Maritime National Historical Park. To protect the
health and safety of visitors and park staff, emergency
temporary closures have been instituted at the Aquatic
Park, Muir Beach, Rodeo Beach, Fort Point, Crissy
Field Beach, China Beach, Baker Beach, and Kirby
Cove. The temporary emergency closures will remain
in effect until the extent of contamination and
health risks have been assessed. Although swimming
and boating activities have been curtailed in San
Francisco Maritime National Historical Park's lagoon,
the historic vessels at Hyde Street Pier remain
open. A Bay Area-wide unified command, led by the
US Coast Guard is in place. This is the largest
oil spill in the San Francisco Bay since the Cape
Mohegan incident in 1996. To volunteer,

IT’S
OFFICIAL: Governor Suspends Fishing and Crabbing Due
to Last Week’s Oil Spill
|

12:27 PST SAN FRANCISCO - -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
issued an executive order late this morning suspending
all fishing and crabbing for human consumption
in areas affected by the Cosco Busan fuel spill
until at least Dec. 1. |
The ban includes all of San Francisco Bay, along
with affected shorelines, coastlines and waters of
San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo,
Solano and Sonoma counties.
The recommendation comes from several state agencies,
including the Office of Environmental Health Hazard
Assessment and Department of Fish and Game.
"The governor does not want anyone fishing or
crabbing in these waters until the Department of Fish
and Game deems the area safe," said Aaron McLear,
Schwarzenegger's press secretary.
The decision confirms that the local commercial crabbers
will not set gear before Dec. 1. Crabbers from San
Francisco and Marin counties, as well as Half Moon
Bayand Bodega Bay, already had voted to delay their
opener.

Special advisories issued to swimmers, surfers and boat
owners San Francisco, CA - Departments and agencies
throughout the City and County of San Francisco have
responded to yesterday's incident when a container ship
accidentally hit the D Span of the Bay Bridge, causing
approximately 58,000 gallons of heavy duty bunker fuel
to spill into the San Francisco Bay. The
Department of Public Health is advising people to
avoid going to the beaches. Beach closures have been
instituted at Baker Beach, Crissy Field, China Beach,
Fort Point and Kirby Cove and Rodeo Beaches in Marin
County. Muir Beach and the Angel Island shoreline
are also closed to the public.
Officials are advising beach visitors to avoid water
activities including swimming, surfing or windsurfing
at these locations. People should also avoid bringing
unleashed dogs to any of the City's beaches until
they have been reopened. Additionally, signs have
been posted along the beaches and water access areas
of the Port warning people to not fish or enter the
water. Ferry service remains unaffected.
In an effort to curtail the spread of oil along the
City's shoreline and to save boat owners clean-up
costs, City officials are advising all recreational
boaters berthing at the following marinas to remain
on dock until at least Tuesday, November 13, 2007:

The San Francisco Animal
Care and Control Department, in conjunction with Oiled
Wildlife Care Network, has set up a system to rescue
and clean any bird or mammal affected by the oil spill.
Do not attempt to capture or assist a wild bird or
mammal in distress. Anyone who sees wildlife in distress
is advised to telephone 3-1-1 and identify the location
of the wildlife. Members of the public who want to
volunteer with clean-up efforts should listen for
further announcements regarding how to become involved.
City departments are working with a number of state
and federal agencies to determine the most efficient
way to utilize volunteers. Animal rescue volunteers
should visit the website www.owcn.org.
